In the book Women Entrepreneurs in the Middle East, a number of international researchers describe what it is like to be a woman and an entrepreneur in the Middle East – a region with largely patriarchal social structures. The researchers analyze, among other things, the context of entrepreneurship and the ecosystems that surround women’s business activities. Culture, religion and colonial experiences are highlighted as key factors that affect women’s opportunities and challenges in entrepreneurship.
The book features success stories of entrepreneurial women in 11 selected countries. Each chapter also includes a historical overview and contemporary examples of women’s contribution to economic development, both at local and regional level, in the country concerned. It also describes the support systems and networks available. In addition, the reader is provided with an overview of the policies and strategies shaping the future of women’s entrepreneurship in the region.
The book is aimed at researchers, students and practitioners working on issues of women’s entrepreneurship and small business in the Middle East.
