Handelsbanken’s research foundations recently distributed SEK 155 million to economic research, the largest distribution to date in the program category. Of the support, SEK 16.2 million went to eleven projects in entrepreneurship and innovation, corresponding to just over ten percent of the total award. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The researchers behind the projects are located at seven different universities, from Uppsala to Lund. The projects span several areas of economics, including economic geography, economic history, business administration, economics and law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research projects currently receiving support span several different areas. Projects include studies on farm sales of alcoholic beverages, corporate restructuring, innovation labs in large companies, sustainable food transition and family business research collaborations. Other projects examine how engineers’ networks have historically influenced innovation, as well as how knowledge, labor, and technology spread between firms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the allocation to innovation and entrepreneurship researchers proportionate to the number of applications from them?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

– It is very difficult to say whether the allocation is proportional to the number of applications, because we do not categorize the applications in that way. But in general, I think innovation and entrepreneurship are areas where we get a lot of good applications. Since we don’t target specific areas in our calls, our most important guiding principle is that the research we support should be of very high quality, says Martin Bl\u00e5varg, Head of the Handelsbanken Research Foundations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lots of AI and health economics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the latest call, 383 applications were received. According to Martin Bl\u00e5varg, there are several clear trends in economic research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– There is a lot about AI. It’s both research on what AI means for business and society, and research that uses different AI-based methods. Another area where we receive a lot of applications is health and health economics, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also emphasizes the importance of doctoral funding for the long-term development of economic research in Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– We know that the resurgence of economic research is highly dependent on the training of sufficient numbers of doctoral students. That’s why we are keen to support projects that fund PhD students. We want them to be able to start their research careers under reasonable conditions, says Martin Bl\u00e5varg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
